Brotherhood of the wolf teaser trailer

Now that we’re getting close to finalising out ideas and creating our storyboards we have decided to look at different werewolf teaser trailers in order to identify the codes and conventions of each, by doing this it will help us decided what to include in our final production. These are the codes and conventions found in French film ‘Brotherhood of the Wolf’:

• As we have already seen in our prior research ‘Brotherhood of the Werewolf’ is set in a vast, open space and is largely focused around the woods

• The camera angles used in the opening give the trailer a sense of mystery, by using large amounts of close ups the audience are made aware of the presence of a werewolf without even having to see it by the emotions and reactions to sound of the actors . This has inspired us as we realised there is little chance of us being able to fully recreate a werewolf using make-up alone

• As with films such as ‘The Werewolf 2010’, ‘Brotherhood of the Werewolf’ is a period film, again impractical for use to recreate due to costuming

• Within the trailer there is the ‘Brave challenger’ who saves the villagers and is the protagonist of the film, this is seen in a lot of werewolf as they are an elaboration of ‘good vs evil’, this follows the theory of Levi-Strauss, that without the werewolf there would be no ‘Brave challenger’

• As with a few of the werewolf films we have seen there is a period of clam which is interjected by the arrival of the werewolf intending to make the audience jump.

• Following the idea of origination form European folk law the trailer for ‘Brotherhood of the Wolf’ trailer features shots from books and drawings of the beast which implies mythology.

• There are lots of shots of women and children this is used to emphasise their innoncence and create greater fear of the werewolf as it appears to attack the ‘innocent’

• Within the trailer there are very little shots of the werewolf itself.
